FPGA Based Generalized Switched Reluctance Motor Controller

Abstract


this paper presents an approach towards building a dedicated fully digital embedded switched reluctance motor (SRM) controller based on a field programmable gate array (FPGA) circuit. The essentials of
the switched reluctance motor operation and control principles are briefly introduced and the hardware implementation of the digital FPGA controller is discussed. Prior to build the controller a precise mathematical model based on artificial neural network has been built that solves the problems related with the high nonlinearity of the magnetic circuit of the motor. The coefficients obtained with the aid of this model are included as parameters in the Verilog HDL description of the main algorithms. The paper highlights some advantages of FPGA devices outlining their power and flexibility when it is about running of parallel processing algorithms.
